Miao Lusheng Festival Kaili Guizhou

Lusheng Festival is one of the most important festivals for ethnic Miao groups in Kaili, Guizhou Province. This is a colorful courting party replete with exciting bullfights, horse races, Lusheng (a traditional musical instrument) playing, singing contests, costume shows and traditional dancing. The girls in their intricate silver head-dresses and beautiful embroidered costumes flaunt their wealth and beauty to attract their future husbands.

The Lusheng festival usually takes place in January and February. It lasts for 4-6 days, the second and third being the most important. Despite the cold weather, don’t miss he opportunity to visit them.You will be there for the best days to witness Lusheng playing, costume shows, dancing and singing. You will be greeted at the festival by Miao girls eager to sing to you and share their plentiful rice wine. Take care to sip very little from each cup, as you may encounter as many as 16-20 cups on your way in!

All the Miao people come together from different villages. The girls dress up in their best traditional costume and silver headdresses, while the boys carry their lusheng and head to the Lusheng Stadium to celebrate the festival. In only a very few areas will boys wear traditional dress; for the most part, men have lost this costume. At Zhouxi, near Kaili, man boys of each village play Lusheng pipes while forming a circle, girls follow with a relatively simple dance step to show off their costumes to best advantage. They circle in rings as the girls dance to the rhythm of the music provided by the boys. The ceremony is performed to bring hope for a favorable harvest in the coming year alongside good health. It is also a chance for the youth to express their admiration and love towards one another.

Also Wushu activities and some extremely difficult acrobatic feats of the Miao people have been assimilated in Lusheng dance, which are especially loved by the masses.
