Soft Bed Hotel Guangzhou

For those who have not stayed in a chinese hotel, read the following for an education. Mattresses come in two styles in China: really hard, and then normal soft. The really hard ones are the old hotel style which I do mean is really really hard  and soft western style ones. To emphasize more: when I say hard, just think of hard as a floor with a carpet over it … or hard as a wooden boxspring (kind of like the simple cheapo boxsprings in mattress stores .. the ones without springs. That is how hard the mattresses are at this Donlord International Hotel.

But really everything else in the hotel is pretty darn good. As others say, the hotel is affordable. It is very clean, the air conditioner worked great (and it kept the humidity low, that is worth money to be paid for), the internet fast, the tv was good, the check in ladies attractive and pleasant. really it all is great, except they have granite mattresses. So what did I do?

I asked for a soft one, and the manager gave the look like, “oh no here we go again.” He called someone, looked worried a bit, and said the hotel has 2 western style soft mattresses and both rooms were being used. Sorry. I say, I understand, that is fine, just refund me the 435 Yuan. Sorry again.

Now here is the rub, bc i booked it through the hotel desk at the airport, the hotel would not refund me the money. I had to go to the agent. I somehow expected this answer, but I made a stink about anyway. No budging. So I came up with a solution to get 8 feather pillows (yes feather pillows on a stone slab mattress) and then put the sheets over the pillows and I had a rigged myself a feather bed chinese style. The manager found it creative and amusing enough he sent up some fruit as a “sorry about the granite mattress” missive.

The service was nice and people were pleasant. the manager was apologetic.

So beware when you reserve, and call and ask if the mattress is western style soft. One of my friend recommend me to choose President Hotel a newly decorated 4 star hotel, the bed might be the softest one in the whole Guangzhou. So I will choose President Hotel for my next trip during 105th Canton Fair in next April!
