Sichuan is usually described as being in the southwest of China, but although it is about 1000 km (600 miles) west of the east coast, it lies less than half way to China's western border. 110,000,000 people live in Sichuan , making it one of the most densely populated provinces of China. The largest ethnic group after the Han are the Yi, with a population estimated at 1.3 million (1992). Most of the ethnic groups reside in the mountainous western half of Sichuan. Kham, in general, refers to a wide land area which includes Chamdo area in Eastern Tibet.,Yushu Tibetan prefecture in Southern Qinghai province , Ganzi Tibetan prefecture in Western Sichuan province and Derchin Tibetan area in Northern Yunnan province . When we are saying Kham, we generally mean the adjoining area between East Tibet A.R., South Qinghai, West Sichuan and North Yunnan, this area features in big mountains, deep rivers,wide valleys, virgin beauties and Tibetan culture. The population here is about 3 millions, Tibetans make the most part of it. Kham area was thought in history to be the home town of Tibetans legendary hero - King Gesar. He led his people bravely and fought for life of liberty and at last, They founded a powerful kingdom--Ling kingdom. After long time of research and hot arguing, the Axu pasture in Shiqu county in northwest corner of Suchuan is the place where King Gesar was born and the Ling kingdom sprung up in 6-7th century.People there, usually named as Khambas, became famous for their warlike spirit, a lot of legends and stories could portray you a vivid figure of Khamba.
