Zhangfei's Temple
Opposite to the Yunyang County , the magnificent Zhang Fei's Temple with glazed tiles and red walls perches on the Flying Phoenix Hill on the southern bank of the river. The Temple was built to commemorate General Zhang Fei - one of the three sworn brothers of the State of Shu during the Three Kingdoms Period, (the other two were Liu Bei and Guan Yu). The Temple is a famous historical site along the Yangtze River.
A new Zhang Fei's Temple will be built on the southern bank of the river according to its original style and with its original building materials before it will be submerged after the completion of the Three Gorges Project.
Shibaozhai (Treasured Stone) Stockade
The whole building, composed of a gate, gate tower, and an ancient Buddhist temple on the top, guards the only path up the mountain. The cultural relics and calligraphy and paintings by famous persons were unearthed in Zhongxian County since the New Stone Age are displayed in the hall. It is called one of the "world's eight great majestic buildings."
Fengdu Ghost City
Located on the north bank of the Yangtze River, Fengdu is an ancient city with a long history. It is also known as the so-called "Abode of Ghosts." According to superstitious legend, "the dead come to Fengdu and the devils go to hell." Since Tang Dynasty, forty-eight temples have been built in this place, such as the "Hall of the Jade Emperor," the "Palace of Hell, " "Boundary Between the Living and the Dead, " the "Ridge of Helplessness," and the "Balcony of Nostalgia." All of the temples there look quite magnificent while statues are extremely lifelike.
