Nantong sits on the north shore of the estuary of the Yangzi, where the great river becomes so wide it far bank is out of sight.
Nantong was a model of progress at the start of the 20th century, and its downtown boasts a rich collection of historic architecture from this period. A network of tree-lined canals weave through the downtown, where modern buildings sit alongside charming buildings from the turn of the century. Just off the main streets, the quiet back streets are lined with traditional homes, where the occasional glare of an TV through a window the only reminder of the modern times.
Several excellent museums in this historic district are dedicated to Nantong's history, while studios showcase and demonstrate Nantong's local crafts, blue printed calico and expert embroidery. Just outside the city, the sacred Buddhist mountain Lang Shan rises from the flat flood plains along the Yangzi. Lang Shan's forested slopes of are dotted with he brilliant saffron walls of Buddhist monasteries, and their terraces providing magnificent views over the majestic river.
