With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Nanjing enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall.

Spring and Autumn in Nanjing are relatively short compared with summer and winter.

 

The city has a frost-free period lasting up to 230 days a year, and receives and average annual rainfall of 1,200 millimetres . However, nearly 60% of the precipitation comes during the May-September flood season, which is divided into three rainy periods, namely, the Spring Rains, the Plum Rains and the autumn Rains.

Nanjing gets the title of "the blazing furnace" for the perennially high temperatures in the summertime. The other two "Furnacelike Cities" along the Yangtze River are Wuhan and Chongqing. During the middle ten days of Mid June, brings there intermittent drizzles. Therefore, the best season to visit this city is either in spring or autumn.

 

Nanjing has a humid subtropical climate and is under the influence of the East Asia Monsoon. Seasons are distinct in Nanjing, with usually hot summers and plenty of rainfall throughout the year.

 

The average temperature during the year is 16 °C (61 °F). The average high temperature in January is 7 °C (45 °F) while the average low is −1 °C (30.2 °F); the average high in July is 32 °C (90 °F) with an average low of 25 °C (77 °F).[16] The highest recorded temperature is 40.7 °C (105 °F) (Aug 22, 1959), and the lowest −14 °C (7 °F) (Jan 6, 1955).

 

On average it rains 117 days out of the year, and the average annual rainfall is 1,106.5 millimetres (43.6 in). The time from mid-June to the end of July is the plum blossom Meiyu season, during which the city experiences a period of mild rain as well as dampness.
