Dzong Fort

The town of Gyantse is surrounded by a wall 3 km long. 

 

The Dzong Fort is localed on Dzong Hill, in the center of Gyantse.  It was the office of the former local governmet of Gyantse. 

 

The fortress (constructed in 1390) guarded the southern approaches to the Tsangpo Valley and Lhasa.

Gyantse is often referred to as the "Hero City" because during the British Younghusband expedition of 1904, the 500 soldiers of the Gyantse dzong held the fort for several days before they were overcome by the British forces.

 

Four steles set up by the high-rank commissioners dispatched by the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty are still kept in good order for extremely precious value as the historical cultural relics. 

 

Cimbing up to the top of the Dzong Fort, you will have a panoramic view of the whole area of Gyantse.

On the slope of the wuze Hill in Genbei five kilometers northwest of Lhasa, the Drepung Monastery was built in 1416 and is the largest of the monastery of the Gelug Sect.
