About Ningde

The scenic spots in Ningde mainly include "Fairy Land on the Sea" Taimu Mountain in Fuding, "World Wonder" Mandarin Duck Stream in Pingnan, Baishuiyang Water Square, "No.1 Waterfall in East China" Jiulongji Waterfalls in Zhouning, Carp Stream in Zhouning that has been famous for its harmony between fish and people in the last several centuries, Chi Bank where Master Kukai of Japan landed to seek the Buddha way from Tang Dynasty, Linshui Temple that shares high reputation with Mazu Temple in Southeast Asia, Cuiping Lake in Gutian that resembles Taihu Lake, and natural harbor of Sandu’ao etc. They are all fascinating tourist attractions. Ningde is also a living concentration area of She Nationality. Villages and stockades of She Nationality still keep the romantic feeling of archaic folk customs.

Locally called "Luantan"，Beilu Opera is popular in the Mindong Area centered around Shouning County of East Fujian, South Zhejiang, and neighboring counties of Shouning. Mainly composed of Ch’in Melody and blowing melody, it originated from the region of Zhejiang. During its long-term development, it absorbed the melodies of Anhui Opera, Han Opera, Tanhuang and folk songs and integrated them into an multi-melody opera mainly based on Pingban which is closely related with Ch’in Melody and blowing melody. Traditional plays of Beilu Opera include "Hack Mountain to Save Mother", "Meeting between the Odd and the Even", "Iron Sand Bow", "Iron Lotus", "predestined by Emerald Green Clothes", "Hit Gold Crown", "Go to Chenzhou", "Wang Kylin", "Luocheng Writing a Book" etc.

Pengpeng Drum

Also known as Peony Melody, it is a sect of Lianhualuo (lotus root) and is mainly popular in counties of Fuding, Xiapu, Ningde, Shouning ect of East Fujian. The sound of "Pengpeng" is produced when patting a fishing drum with four fingers, so a Fishing Drum is also called Pengpeng Drum. To play it, nestle the Fishing Drum in left hand，pat drum head with right hand. Finger positions include "strike"（pat with four fingers at the same time）, "roll"（pat non-stop with four fingers alternately）, "rub"（apply four fingers to silence）, "flip"（bend and pat non-stop with four fingers alternately）etc. Both singing and speaking with Pengpeng Drum are in Ningde dialect, and singing is given priority without much speaking. The song words are basically seven-character sentence, with inexact rhyming. The tune is vigorous and firm, with lasting epilogue, full of local characteristic of Fujian.

Siping Opera of Pingnan County

Pingnan County has long been known as "Hometown of Chinese Folk Operas". Locally called "Plebeian Opera", and praised as "Living Fossil of Siping Melody of Ming Dynasty", Siping Opera is an old-fashioned opera originating from the region of Huizhou, Anhui in Jiajing Reign of the Ming Dynasty. It is mainly composed of Siping Melody, which is sung without makeup and acting on the stage and chimed by the backstage. At the brink of extinction in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, it was introduced into Fujian. Since then, over 400 hundred years have passed. At the height of power and splendor, the opera was once spread all over Pingnan County and 20-odd villages of its neighboring counties and cities, even to as far as Southwest Jiangxi and East Zhejiang.
