Guangzhou has a developed ocean shipping industry, and is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao. All this has laid a solid foundation for the city's convention and exhibition economy.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Guangzhou, taking advantage of its close contacts with overseas Chinese, held several material exchange fairs and Guangzhou export commodities exhibition and trade fairs, whose foreign exchange earnings made up 20 percent of the national total. In 1957, the State Council approved the China Export Commodities Fair, which has since been held in Guangzhou twice a year, in spring and autumn.
The China Export Commodities Fair is an embodiment of the development of foreign trade, and epitomizes its history in China. Up to now, 89 sessions of trade fairs have been held, and participants have increased from 1,000 people from more than 10 countries to 100,000 people from 181 countries. It is a comprehensive national trade fair that can be described in superlatives: the longest history, the largest scale, the broadest scope of commodities, the largest number of participants, and the largest amount of transactions.
At the Chinese Export Commodities Fair, domestic enterprises are the sellers and foreign firms are the buyers, so the cooperative intention is very clear. Since its opening, the trade fair has been well received by foreign merchants. (Source: China Today)
