Shantou Culture

 

Shantou people can not live without tea, as they like tea very much. According to China Daily that Shantou people drink more tea than anyone else in Chaozhou China.

 

Shantou with traditional Chao and Shan culture , and combined with the overseas Chinese culture and the trade culture. Since 1995, Shantou has established its special Culture featured in “Unique, Chao Style, Seashore, Overseas Culture” by fully taking the advantage of regional and humanistic geography strengths.

 

Shantou History

 

Shantou city was a fishing village and it was part of Jieyang District during the Song Dynasty. Shantou had been called Shashan Ping as early as 1574. In the 17th century, a cannon platform called Shashan Toupaotai was made here, and the place name later was shortened to "Shantou". In 1919, Shantou became a city. In 1930, Shantou Port become a transport hub and merchandise distribution centre for Southeast China, its cargo throughput ranked third in the nation.

Shantou is a beautiful place with green hills and clear water, and it enjoys a reputation of the "Green Diamond". There are many beautiful scenic spots in Shantou, include The Mayu island, Lotus Flower Peak, Lingshan Monastery, Zhongshan park, Qing Yun Crags, Laiwu lslet and the Buddhism Pagoda Mountain, etc.

Zhongshan Park
Zhongshan Park, built in 1926, is the oldest and biggest park in Shantou. It is located in the downtown area and covers an area of about 200,000 square meters. The three main attractions include the archway, the rockery sight and the wigwag bridge.

 

Mayu Island
Mayu Island is also called Fangji Island by the locals. It is very strange that there are two Ma Zu Temples on one island. It said that the fisherfolks believe in Ma Zu. For thousands of years, people come to the island and offer sacrifice to Ma Zu Temple. Now the temple is very famous in Guangdong province.
