In the book, "The Forgotten Kindom", published by London John Murray Publishing House, the Russian, Peter Goullart narrated his nine-year life in Lijiang in a lyrical tune.
This book, showed the readers every aspect of life and customs of Lijiang at the time.
Peter Goullart was deeply attracted by the fascinating landscape, unipue ethnic culture and the kind and honest Naxi people. He took himself as a native Naxi and loved the leisure and tasteful life here. Among the enthusiastic Naxi people, he felt contented and delightd. It was in this place that he finall found a spiritual homeland.
Peter Goullart opened about forty lacal co-operatiions, which covered spinning and weaving, printing and dyeing, hide processing, smelting, papermaking, grain processing, wood, furniture and other fields. All these co-operations helped strengthen the basis of the local handicrafts and promoted the development of the econamy.
In 1940s, Peter Goullart wrote about the Ancient Dongba Music. He thought it was "a carol of the universal life, unaffected by the conflicts in the incongruous human life. The music is classical and ever-lasting. It is the music of the gods. It is the music of a peaceful, permanent and serene country."
