Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, is known of as the City of Springs, in the surrounding area, there are more than 140 springs, including the four spring groups-Spurting Spring, Black Tiger Sring, Pearl Spring and Five-Dragon Pool. An old saying goes: "Each family in Jinan has spring water and weeping willows." Daming Lake watered by many underground springs, and the Thousand-Buddha Hill in the south form a beautiful picture: "With lotus flowers on four sides,and weeping willows on three sides, the mountain is reflected in the lake." Hence the lotus was designated as the flowers of the city, and the weeping willow, the three of Jinan..

 

Jinan, also the birthplace of Longshan culture, boasts the oldest one-story stone pagoda in China; the four-door pagoda constructed in the Sui Dynasty (581-618 B.C); a stone shrine by the Guo Ju's tomb in Xiaotang Mountain, the oldest ground house in China; and the painted sculptures of arhats of Song Dynasty (960-1279) in Lingyan Temple, known as the "No.1 sculptures in the world"; in addition to many historical and cultural celebrities of Jinan, such as Bian Que, Qin Qiong, Li Qingzhao, Xin Qiji, Bian Gong and Li Panlong. All of these make Jinan kown as a famous historical and cultural city in China.

Daming Lake Spring Folk Customs and Culture Tourism Fair

 

During the fair, the Daming Lake Park is beautifully decorated. Various kinds operas, acrobatics, Quyi (folk art forms in cluding ballad singing, story telling, comic dialogues, clapper talks, cross talks, etc.) and pepshows with singing and commentary will be put on, in addition to taming white rates, and taking sedan chairs. During the festival, people gather in the park, singing softly and dancing with grace and ease by the lake and under th lantern light, enjoying to their heart's content.

 

Thousand Buddha Mountain Fair at the Double Ninth Festival

 

This festival was first celebrated in the Yuan Dynasty. At the Double Ninth Festival with clear sky and crisp air in autumn, people climb the mountain to appreciate chrysanthemums, and go to the mountain fair. It is a traditional festival, as well as a customs activity. During the festival, tourists can enjoy circus, magic, acrobaics and Quyi while a large number of peddlers stand by the mountain paths to sell goods to tourists; and the mountain is crowded with people, bustling with noise and excitement.

Daming Lake Park

Located in the center of the city proper, and in the north of the old city area, Daming Lake is one of the three major scenic spots in Jinan. With a water surface of 460,000 square meters, Daming Lake is watered by numerous natural springs, and enjoys a reputation of being the "Pearl of the City of Springs."

By the lake, visitors can find Lesser Canglang Gargen, North Pole Pavilion, Lord Tie Shrine, Nanfeng Shrine which was constructed to commemorate Zeng Gong, one of the eight famous scholars of the Tang (618-907 B.C) and Song dynasties, and Jiaxuan Shrine for commemorating Xin Qiji, a famous Ci poetry writer of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 B.C). Since ancient times, Daming Lake has been well known for its appealing scenery.

 

Qianfo Mountain

 

Qianfo Mountain

Situated in the south of Jinan City, Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Mountain) is 258 meters above sea level. Standing at the mountaintop, tourists can have a panoramic view of the whole city. With an area of 1.66 million square meters, the mountain is a tourist attraction featuring both Shun culture and Buddhist culture. Stretching from east to west, the mountain looks like a beautiful scenic screen when viewed from a distance.

 

A number of places of historic interest can be found in the mountain, such as Xingguo Buddhist Temple, Thousand Buddha Cliff, Lishan Academy, Thousand Buddha Cave, etc. Xiingguo Temple consists of the Grand Hall, Avalokitesvara Hall, and Duihua Hall. On Thousand Buddha Cliff, there are 130-some Buddhist statues carved in the Kaihuang reign period of the Sui Dynasty (581-618 B.C). Lishan Academy shows a combination of Confudianism, Taoism and Buddhism, in which vistitors can find Shun Shrine, Lu Ban Shrine, Wenchang Pavilion, Yilan Pavilion, and so on. Thousand Buddha Cave displays the characteristics of the four major grotoes in China.
