Dragon Boat Festival in Shidong

 

The dragon boat festival is celebrated on the Qingshui River between 24th and 27th of the fifth lunar month.  It is one of the biggest event for Miao ethnic living in Kaili and Shidong.

From June 26 to June 28, go to Shidong,

 

Every village has 3 unique boats. One is the 17 meter (56 foot)and two 10 meter (33 foot), they are constructed from fir, each with a carved dragon's head on its prow.

 

Different boats are used in different days in the festival period.  The 10 meter boat is used for racing.  The Dragon Boat Racing is held on Qingshui river.   The winner will be rewarded as the most brave man team, and that is the dream of every young man.  Even after years and years, people still remember the fellows who honor the name of their village.

 

The day of dragon boat race is also one of the biggest market day, people bring their home-made meterials and trade in the market.

The 10 meter boat is used to visit villages scattering along the river, if you have time, take a boat ride to visit some villages!

 

When we are reaching a village, people play fire crackers and fireworks to welcome their guests. Kindly remind you to be careful for invitations of having a drink in their homes. The home-make wine is sweet, foods are good, people are willing to share their happiness...Even the women can drink a lot, and sing beautiful songs, it makes to you difficult to say no.
